Simple Pleasures Cafe on Balboa Street is the kind of neighborhood spot where locals settle in with their laptops, meet friends for a casual catch-up, or take a break from their morning stroll with a carefully crafted cup of coffee. This cafe pairs a straightforward, relaxed vibe with well-roasted beans that attract those who appreciate quality coffee without fuss. The rich lineup—from their Dark French roast to an organic Colombian single origin—caters to both bold coffee drinkers and those looking for decaf options that don’t skimp on flavor.

The atmosphere reflects a genuine neighborhood hub: a mix of folks working quietly, small groups chatting comfortably, and occasional live music adding subtle background warmth. The interior isn’t flashy but feels lived-in and welcoming, making it easy to linger, whether you’re grabbing a solo breakfast or meeting someone after work. The space also attracts an all-ages crowd, reinforcing the sense of community around this stretch of the Richmond District.

If you’re coming for food, the menu leans into classic breakfast and lunch fare with a twist—bagels served with a variety of fillings like lox or veggie cream cheese, and fresh pastries that regularly pull in repeat customers. Some dishes, like the bacon breakfast bagel or the almond croissant, stand out for their simple reliability, while key lime pie and peach pastries offer a sweet finish. A few customers mentioned that certain sandwich items can be hit or miss, but overall, the food complements the coffee well without overshadowing it.

Visits during mid-morning or early afternoon tend to showcase the cafe at its social best. It’s a spot where the coffee ritual feels centered around the experience as much as the beverage itself. Staff are approachable and knowledgeable, often engaging with visitors about their coffee choices or bakings—a small touch that helps make Simple Pleasures feel more like a local friend’s kitchen than a commercial cafe.

Simple Pleasures is a relaxed space for those who want to enjoy thoughtfully roasted coffee in a no-pressure environment. Whether you’re a remote worker seeking steady Wi-Fi and a warm pour, a couple hunting for a quiet breakfast spot, or a traveler hoping to connect with neighborhood rhythm, this cafe provides a comfortable, unpretentious backdrop where the focus stays on savoring the moment and the craft of a good cup.

I rarely give a place 5 stars, but this place deserves it because I liked everything here. The way the staff treated me, took my order, answered my questions and made my coffee. The taste of my coffee, the live music there, the amazing yummy Egyptian shortbread I asked them to warm up for me and some apricot pie I took home....I liked everything here. Asked them to blend 2 sugar in my cappuccino and they did (other places refuse to do it). Didn't have to wait here. The staff who took my order was awesome (didn't ask her name but I should have to write it here). An awesome coffee place. Love the name too. I couldn't find anything here less than 5 stars except parking....well that doesn't have anything to do with this place (it's SF). I'm saving this place in my list to come back

Rating 5 stars mainly for ambiance and because I’d go back and try other things. Really charming, cozy place with all ages gathered- seems like an established community hub. There’s people working on laptops and just hanging out. Unfortunately the thing I ordered was not satisfying but I’ll try something else next time. I ordered a chai latte and it tasted nothing like any chai I’ve had. I had my two friends take sips of my drink too to verify and they said it tasted like ginger tea. I wonder if my drink got mixed up somehow or if they ran out of chai? If they ran out, I’d rather have been told so I could’ve gotten something else. My friends enjoyed their coffees and bagels. Friendly people and great atmosphere make it worth it for me to come back, try something new, and recommend to others. Oh also! The writing on the cups was beautiful :)

Truly Simple Pleasures. Great coffee. Relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. I also tried the bagel+egg sandwich=not the best. Eggs were a bit sulfery from being old and added ham one thin slice for $3 ?? Still 5 STARS because it was just a great place. Simple and Pleasurable.

Great coffee and food is delicious. I was here every morning and afternoon during my stay in San Francisco and would recommend to anyone looking for great coffee, food and a really chill atmosphere to relax and or meet some really cool locals to learn some history about SF, Thanks Mike and Jon

Don’t walk by this understated exterior. Buzzing, popular coffee shop with locals working and socialising over great coffee and matcha. Genuine and unsweetened matcha. Lots of baked goods and burritos.

This cozy cafe is a community favorite and is always busy. There is both indoor and outdoor seating bit I prefer to sit inside since Balboa is windy most of the time. Their hot sandwiches are really good and unique. I definitely did not expect the jalapeno in there. The dutch crunch is best enjoyed when the bread is still crunchy. Their pastries are also really good though they are kind of pricey. Wish they put the names and prices of their pastries up front.

Simple Pleasures is a mainstay in the Outer Richmond. The roast their own coffee, their vanilla iced lattes are my personal favorite, baked goods are so good, the space is great so you can chill or work, they have an outdoor parklette, and they serve beer later in the day. I love this place.

I really enjoyed visiting this cafe. Food was good, staff was kind, but I would recommend checking ahead of time to see if there’s live music when you visit. It’s nice for the vibes but not the best when you’re trying to study.
